The Nike Years

Creative Director: Nike+
In 2006, Max became the Creative Director of Nike's TechLab, which designed Nike's first smart wearables called the Nike+ Sports Band and the Nike+ Sport Watch.  His team also led the development of a POV around heart rate and training. They worked closely with Nike Digital to inform the product features and roadmap. After the successful launch of Nike+, they became the Digital Innovation team under Brand, where they continued to look across Nike sports categories to see how digital could advance Nike's customer experience. These categories included basketball, football, soccer, men's training, women's fitness, and kids. Max's team originated the concept of "everyday life is a sport" and the idea of Fuel Points. They proposed a wearable that would capture all activity that later became the Fuel Band.
Creative Director: Nike Timing and Monitoring
Max joined Nike in 2004 as the Creative Director of the Timing and Monitoring Business. In this role, he led a team of industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and interaction designers, and visual designers. They worked closely with the merchandising function to define product roadmaps, develop briefs, coordinate with Nike brand and seasonal messages, design collections, and launch products. Max hired agencies and oversaw the RFP process, SOW's, and work output. He was responsible for ongoing interaction with manufacturing in China, including identifying suppliers and assessing quality and output. They launched more than 100 products that achieved an exceptionally high-quality bar (less than 2% failure) and commercial success.

The Smart Years

Senior Designer - VP of Design
I joined Smart in NYC, 1995 as a senior designer. In 2003 I was promoted to VP and made a partner. During my time at Smart, I designed over 20 OXO products that are still in production today including the OXO toilet brush and plunger, colander, ice cream scoop, wooden spoons, cleaning brush, squeegee, etc. On most OXO projects I was involved at  all major steps in the development process from initial research, concept design, and prototypes.  We worked closely with the contract manufacturing to oversee development and production until launch. Some of the other notable products included a new insulin delivery device for Becton Dickenson, a premium high-performance flashlight for Duracell. A line of car detailing tools for Shell black Magic, and a range of products for HP.
